Salem Library

A Community Success Story

The Library project is a unique success story. By involving the entire community in the design process and giving them a stake in the project, detractors were turned into proponents. A community wide fund raising campaign was mounted that was remarkably like the 1903 effort. The exterior and interior of the building were not only restored to their 1905 appearance, but also to their original uses, and sympathetically updated with 21st century infrastructure. Throughout the project the Library Director quipped “you can’t put a library in a Carnegie building.” Now he’s sure you can.
